In a recent EatingWell article, Khanh-Van Tran, MD, PhD, an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, discusses the risks associated with elevated triglyceride levels and outlines steps individuals can take to improve overall heart health. 

According to Dr. Tran, “Elevated triglyceride levels increase the risk of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks, strokes, and chronic inflammation of the blood vessels. Very high triglyceride levels can also increase your risk for acute pancreatitis, which can be life-threatening.” To help lower triglycerides, Dr. Tran recommends reducing the intake of sugary foods, avoiding alcohol, modifying one's diet, exercising, addressing underlying health issues, and taking medication when necessary.
